The cut is what enables the diamond to handle light. The brilliance of the diamond depends on the amount of internal and external reflection of white light from the diamond to the eye.
 
The fire of the diamond is the visible effects of dispersion (or the "rainbow effect").
 
The sparkle is the flashing effects seen when a diamond moves in the light. If a diamond is cut too deep or too shallow, light escapes before it is allowed to reflect the stone's brilliance.

How a Diamond Handle Light

It is the cut that enables a diamond to make the best use of light.

  1. If the cut is too deep, some light escapes through the opposite side of the pavilion.
  2. If the cut is too shallow, light escapes through the pavilion before it can be reflected.
  3. When the diamond is cut to good proportions, light is reflected from one facet to another and then dispersed through the top of the stone. This explains why some diamonds are so much more brilliant than others.
