Clarity Enhancement - Lasering
This
method of Clarity-Enhancement is used to remove "Eye-Visible"
dark black inclusions within the diamond, so that after lasering, the
clarity-enhanced diamond is now totally "Eye-Clean". This process
entails the drilling of very tiny microscopic "openings" into
the diamond and literally "bleaching out" the black included
carbon crystals.
An I1 clarity can sometimes be
improved to an SI1 clarity. The body color of the diamond
is not changed in any way.
Three years ago, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) revised its "Guidelines
For The Jewelry Industry". In its "Revised Guidelines",
the FTC stated that "while it is recommended that a diamond seller
reveal (to a diamond buyer) that a diamond has been Clarity-Enhanced by
laser-drilling, it is not illegal for the diamond seller NOT to disclose
the fact that the diamond has undergone Lasering. There is nothing wrong
with an individual purchasing a lasered diamond, provided he or she knows
that the diamond has been Clarity-Enhanced by lasering. We at Bennett's
feel very strongly that an ethical diamond seller will voluntarily disclose
to a buyer that a diamond has been lasered.
